## What will you learn in Worldviews - From Sustainability to Regeneration course

- This MOOC series is about creating positive impact in complex systems. It is about navigating complexity and uncertainty with new tools and practices, such as “organic emergence”: Complex systems are inherently dynamic and unpredictable: their properties are emergent. An organic way to engage with emergence is to trust in having the right tools and techniques to adaptively cope with sudden surprises or challenges, and to reveal hidden opportunities. In this first MOOC “Regenerative Systems: Sustainability to Regeneration” you train your consciousness about dominant and alternative worldviews. You learn the roots of sustainability and pathways to regeneration. You acquire tools to reframe complexity and befriend uncertainty. You learn to reconnect with nature and to design as nature. You gain awareness through practices of physical and mental activation via self-compassion techniques and flow experiences in nature.Exciting real-world illustrations take you to Hemsedal Norway, Annecy France, Ostana Italy, and Mallorca Spain. This offers a comparative understanding of communities and regions undergoing sustainability transitions across different contexts, cultures, climates and geographies. The prominent content you will learn in this first MOOC are an update on the current state of sustainability science, different angles to understand regeneration, methods such as systemic design and systems-oriented design, resilience assessment, circularity mapping, visual dialogue, cross-scale design, “view from above” perspectives, biomimicry, transdisciplinary research, real-world elaboration, metadesign, and more. The MOOCs’ didactics are designed to combine time and place independent virtual learning through pre-recorded conversations, both accessible as movies and audio files, readings, and practical engagement in nature. An accompanying visual mapping process called Gigamapping acts as a designerly way to co-create your own learning journey and connect across the MOOC series to your final transformative design project. Your personal QUEST guides you through your learning journey. Our DRRS virtual network allows you to exchange with other MOOC participants and to find learning partners in your region where you live.

## Editorial Take

This MOOC from ETH Zurich redefines sustainability education by advancing into regenerative paradigms. It challenges learners to shift mindsets and embrace complexity through integrative design thinking.

### Standout Strengths

- Transformative Framework: The course moves beyond sustainability to regeneration, teaching learners how to co-evolve with ecosystems rather than merely sustain them. This philosophical shift is grounded in scientific rigor and ethical awareness.

- Systems-Oriented Design: Learners master systemic design and cross-scale thinking, enabling them to tackle interconnected challenges. These methods foster holistic problem-solving applicable across diverse environmental and social contexts.

- Organic Emergence Concept: The course introduces 'organic emergence' as a guiding principle, helping learners embrace unpredictability in complex systems. This mindset encourages adaptive, resilient responses to real-world disruptions.

- Global Case Studies: Real-world examples from Hemsedal, Annecy, Ostana, and Mallorca provide rich, comparative insights. These illustrate how different cultures navigate sustainability transitions across climates and geographies.

- Embodied Learning: Physical movement and self-compassion practices are integrated into the curriculum. This fosters mental resilience and deeper connection with nature, enhancing both personal and ecological awareness.

- Visual Mapping with Gigamapping: The use of Gigamapping allows learners to visually structure their knowledge and progress. This designerly method supports reflective learning and connects individual insights across the MOOC series.

### Honest Limitations

- Abstract Conceptual Focus: While rich in theory, the course offers limited hands-on design projects. Learners seeking technical skills may need supplementary practical experiences to apply concepts effectively.

- Prerequisite Interest Needed: The content assumes a pre-existing interest in sustainability and systems thinking. Beginners without background knowledge may find initial modules conceptually dense and challenging to grasp.

- Cost for Certification: Although auditing is free, obtaining a verified certificate requires payment. This may limit access for some learners despite the course's transformative potential.

- Self-Paced Engagement: The lack of live interaction or instructor feedback can reduce accountability. Motivated self-direction is essential to fully benefit from the distributed learning model.

### How to Get the Most Out of It

- Study cadence: Dedicate 4–6 hours weekly to engage fully with videos, readings, and reflections. Consistent pacing ensures deep absorption of complex systems concepts.

- Parallel project: Apply concepts to a local environmental challenge. Use Gigamapping to track your evolving understanding and design interventions.

- Note-taking: Maintain a visual journal combining sketches, quotes, and personal insights. This reinforces learning and supports metacognitive development.

- Community: Join the DRRS network to connect with peers. Regional learning partners enhance practical application and provide mutual support.

- Practice: Engage regularly in nature-based activities. Use self-compassion techniques and flow exercises to internalize regenerative principles.

- Consistency: Follow your personal QUEST framework weekly. This structured reflection deepens commitment and tracks transformative growth over time.

### Supplementary Resources

- Book: Read 'Regenerative Development and Design' by Pamela Mang and Ben Haggard to expand on course concepts and explore case applications.

- Tool: Use Miro or FigJam for digital Gigamapping. These platforms support collaborative visual thinking and systems mapping.

- Follow-up: Enroll in subsequent MOOCs in the DRRS series to build on foundational knowledge and advance into implementation phases.

- Reference: Explore the Resilience Alliance’s publications for deeper insights into resilience assessment and adaptive cycles.

### Common Pitfalls

- Pitfall: Skipping practical engagement in nature reduces experiential learning. Immersing in natural environments is essential to internalize regenerative principles.

- Pitfall: Treating Gigamapping as a passive task limits its value. Actively refine your map weekly to reflect evolving understanding and insights.

- Pitfall: Isolating study from community interaction diminishes impact. Engaging with peers amplifies learning and fosters collective innovation.

### Time & Money ROI

- Time: The 12-week commitment yields strong conceptual clarity and mindset shifts. However, mastery requires ongoing practice beyond the course duration.

- Cost-to-value: Free auditing offers exceptional value for self-directed learners. The course delivers university-level content at no upfront cost.

- Certificate: The verified certificate enhances professional credibility, especially in sustainability and design roles, justifying its fee for career-focused participants.

- Alternative: Comparable programs elsewhere often cost hundreds of dollars; this course provides similar depth at a fraction of the price.

### Editorial Verdict

This course stands out as a pioneering offering in regenerative education, successfully bridging theory, design, and personal transformation. It equips learners with the mental models needed to navigate uncertain futures and contribute meaningfully to ecological and social resilience. The integration of scientific frameworks with embodied practices creates a rare and powerful learning experience that transcends traditional online education.

While the course excels in conceptual depth and philosophical grounding, learners should pair it with hands-on projects to maximize practical impact. Ideal for sustainability professionals, designers, and systems thinkers, it offers exceptional value through free access and a globally relevant curriculum. We recommend it highly for those ready to evolve beyond sustainability toward truly regenerative ways of being and designing.
